My name is _____. I am writing to you because I am deeply concerned about our neighbours around the world who are under-resourced and struggling to respond to the devastating health and economic fallout from COVID-19. As the Government finalises the 2020-21 Federal budget, it is critical that Australia responds to this unprecedented humanitarian crisis by providing a $2bn increase to our international aid budget. Without immediate aid from wealthy countries like Australia, COVID-19 could push over 70 million people into extreme poverty. Women and girls are most at risk, with widespread job losses hitting women in low paid and precarious employment the hardest. ActionAid research has also shown an alarming spike in violence against women since the emergence of COVID-19 as women bear the brunt of the social, health and economic impacts of this crisis. In many low-income countries, women are struggling to access the support they need because governments do not have enough resources to adequately fund healthcare and other public services, including violence against women services. It is crucial that wealthy countries like Australia step up our support for low-income countries so they can take urgent action to save lives and livelihoods. Australia can stand with women in low-income countries by: 1. Providing a new $2bn injection in Australian aid between 2020/21 and 2023/24, including a fair contribution to the Global Humanitarian Response Plan. 2. Committing $100m in funding for violence against women services. 3. Prioritising gender equality in the COVID-19 response by ensuring that 30% of new aid investments have gender equality as their primary objective and 85% have gender equality as their primary or secondary objective. 4. Supporting women-led COVID-19 response efforts by ensuring that 5% of new investments are targeted at frontline women’s rights organisations. I ask that you raise these concerns within Parliament in the lead-up to the October budget – a $2bn increase to Australian Aid is less than 1% of our domestic stimulus package but it would go a long way in assisting low-income countries to expand their COVID-19 response efforts. If Australia does not play our part, vulnerable women and girls will end up paying the price. I look forward to any updates following the Federal Budget in October.
