I am writing to you as a  constituent because I am deeply concerned by the findings revealed in ActionAid Australia’s latest report on Australia’s global fossil fuel industry.

The report shines a light on the impacts of Australian coal, oil, and gas extraction on women in low income countries and, for the first time, provides an estimate of the scale and carbon potential of fossil fuel projects currently being operated or planned by ASX-listed companies.

It reveals that ASX companies have 150 fossil fuel projects in low income countries, and the operational projects alone have the potential to cause 2.4 billion tonnes of carbon emissions. The report also outlines the impacts these projects have on gender equality and women’s rights.

I’m sharing this report with you because it will help you understand the scale of the problem and why I am so concerned about it. Women are disproportionately impacted by coal, oil, and gas extraction, which can further entrench poverty and inequality, increase gender-based violence, loss of livelihoods, health problems, and unpaid work. Fossil fuel mining also accelerates dangerous climate change, which affects women the most.

That’s why I was shocked to find out that Australian fossil fuel companies are planning a fourfold increase of these projects. Without greater regulation, Australian extractives companies will continue to put women’s rights at risk.

I’m aware that the Australian Government has made a number of binding commitments to uphold women’s rights and address climate change, and I am concerned that these are being undermined by the activities of Australian fossil fuel companies operating in low income countries.

I strongly encourage you to follow the recommendations made in the report and implement the policies needed to tackle the carbon pollution caused by these projects, increase accountability of ASX fossil fuel companies, and ensure justice for the women who are being impacted.
