Hi, can I please speak with Senator [Senator’s name]?

The person will likely say they are unavailable to take a call. They may ask you to leave a message.

My name is [your name] and I live in [state/territory]. I’d like to raise with Senator [Senator's name] that I’m concerned about Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s announcement that Australia will sign the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership in early 2020.

I am concerned about the RCEP because: (pick & choose which ones you want to mention)

  • It prioritises corporate rights at the expense of the rights of more than 1.1 billion women and girls in the 15 countries that will sign onto this deal.
  • It was entirely negotiated in secret. The final text of the deal won’t be released until after it is signed so we don’t know for sure what damaging clauses the deal contains.
  • It could allow corporations to sue governments under Investor State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) clauses. This is when governments introduce laws that are in the public interest but may violate the terms of the trade agreement.
  • It could undermine the ability of governments to provide public services that women rely on like transport, schools, and hospitals.
  • It could extend big pharmaceutical companies' patents and therefore make life-saving medicines more expensive.
  • And in Australia, it could also lead to the increased exploitation of vulnerable groups, especially women migrant workers.

That's why I am asking that Senator [Senator's name] call for the release of the text. I'm asking for an independent analysis of gender and other impacts of the deal. I am also asking that Senator [Senator's name] not vote for the implementing legislation of the RCEP when it comes to Parliament if it contains clauses that hurt women’s rights.

Hear what their response is (they'll likely say they will pass the message on), thank the person for their time, & wrap up the call.
